To Get rid of a Mockingbird: Similarities in Tom and Boo’s Lives Essay

Certain uncanny resemblances between Tom Robinson and Boo Radley's lives exist in Harper Lee's To Get rid of A Mockingbird. Often large groups of persons misunderstand specific unusual individuals. Sometimes that they stereotype anybody; other times, they simply do not bother to find out the reality. When such circumstances occur, the ostracized person's actions become illegally misinterpreted or not understood at all. Occasionally rumors pass about the individuals, which may then end up being assumed as the truth. With this novel, Tom and Disapprove are both outsiders to the white-colored, normal society of Maycomb county. Jeff and Disapprove share generous natures which can be misunderstood; they hold small social worth, and are generally assumed guilty.

The first parallel inside the lives of Tom and Boo, is targeted on their property. Mary lives in the " nigger nest" (pg. 175) close to Mr. Ewell but outside of the city limits. While testifying Mr. Ewell says, " I've asked this region for twelve to fifteen years to wash out that nest straight down yonder, they're dangerous to have around 'sides devaluin' my own property (pg. 175)". Someone’s status generally relates to his property, as well as the interpretation of the property's worth is often based upon the tenants of the land. In Maycomb county, the black community inhabits the smallest amount of desirable home. In the Rick Crow period, blacks had been stereotyped while violent and unclean; consequently , the property they owned was considered unvaluable and was located in the worst portion of the county area. On the other hand, the folks in the " best" component to town are white and upper class people of culture. Mr. Ewell lives straight next for the town remove, yet this individual considers the blacks that he lives near a more substantial threat to his land's value than the appearance and stench with the city's garbage. Most people in the better regions of town may even agree with him because they will assume that the black folks are a constant menace to white society, and being near them endangers one's lifestyle.
