The era of Reconstruction inside the 1870s in both the North and To the south experienced challenge for equal rights for men liberated by the 13th Amendment. America was around the brink of recreating the American federal government, showing genuine signs of a much better and lighter future for the Dark-colored population. Monetary and personal practices limited the liberties of dark-colored men. Vicious hate groups struck fear unto individuals who supported the mixing of freedmen. The personal realm during the time saw a regression of pro-equality emotions in both the Union and in the South. Inspite of the guaranteeing hope for African Americans that surfaced in 1876, personal, economic, and social factors laced through the entire American government altered the opportunity of the guarantee of equivalent rights intended for freedmen.

The South showed extreme disdain for liberated African-American people. Restrictions were placed on freedmen in order to hinder their achievement in a recently freed region. These laws and regulations, often called " Black Codes”, prohibited the freedman by practicing fundamental rights. In Opelousas, Louisiana, black males and females were not in order to live in community, go into town, or carry public group meetings in town, and in addition they were necessary to be " in the services of several white person, or past owner” (Document A).
